Students with vocational qualifications

VCEs and BTEC National Diplomas/Certificates are recognised entry requirements for most higher education courses (as are A level qualifications).

You need to think about:

Recognition of core skills

Does the course for which you are applying require GCSE maths and English language at grade C or above?

If you do not have these, check to see if the institution will accept key skills in the courses you have studied, eg application of number and communication instead.

Entry criteria

Does the course you are considering require high grade vocational qualifications?

VCEs and the CACHE Diploma are graded A-E in the same way as A levels. The BTEC National Diploma will continue to be graded at pass, merit and distinction levels. If in doubt, check.

Some courses might ask for a combination of VCEs and a traditional A level if a specific subject is needed in depth.

Use the UCAS Big Guide book, UCAS Official CD, or www.ucas.com to check the requirements.

Styles and assessment

You may be used to the continuous assessment approach. Some degree courses may still be assessed by means of unseen exams and through essay writing.

Decide which method of assessment would suit you best and check to see how individual courses are organised.

Read the university prospectuses very carefully or contact the universities to check which method of assessment they use.

Relevance of current studies

If you have chosen to study a higher education course that is not directly linked to your current course, you may need to check that your qualifications are acceptable. This is also true for A level students.

You may need to spell out in your UCAS personal statement how your qualifications and experience are relevant to your choice of course. (See Completing the personal statement.) (link to this page)

Top tips!

  • The vast majority of universities are very positive about VCE and BTEC qualifications.
  • Don’t forget to check out university prospectuses, websites and the UCAS Big Guide book to research your choice.
