Opportunities to study abroad There have never been so many opportunities to include a foreign experience within your degree. A period abroad as part of a degree is no longer reserved for language students. Many degree subjects now offer the opportunity to spend a period of time, either working or studying in another country. A summary of this is listed under each subject in the Degree Course Offers book (Trotman). Universities with study or work opportunities abroad will have developed good links within those countries. There are more than 500 degree and diploma courses that allow for part of your course to be completed in another country. The following organisations offer a range of study and work experience abroad to students on UK university courses. Click here for some useful websites. This programme offers students the possibility to study in a European country for a period of between 3 and 12 months. Approximately 10,000 British students take part in the programme each year. If you are interested you should find out which UK institutions offer an Erasmus option for your chosen course. Erasmus study is fully recognised by participating home institutions as part of the degree. For more details see www.erasmus.ac.uk . (International Association for Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) Science, technology and engineering students can undertake paid course related work placements abroad. Finance is the major consideration when looking at study in the USA as you will need to consider the cost of study (tuition, fees, books, study materials etc), living expenses and travel to and from home. You will need to think how you might fund this. As well as needing to meet the general entry requirements for the course, overseas students will also need to take a Scholastic Assessment Test ( SAT ). All universities will ask for the SAT 1 test and some will also request the SAT 2. Full details about applying for higher education in the USA and taking the SAT tests can be obtained from the Fulbright Commission, Educational Advisory Service, Fulbright House, 62 Doughty St , London WC1N 2JZ .
