The IB Diploma

In broad terms this can be described as the end qualification gained by successful students at the end of 12th grade / Year 13. This is currently studied in 2361 schools across 128 countries across the world. This includes approximately 120 (and growing) in the UK who offer one level or another of the International Baccalaureate programme.

The Diploma itself is a two year programme within which students:

  • Study six subjects chosen from six subject groups
  • Complete an extended essay
  • Follow a Theory of Knowledge course (TOK)
  • Participate in creativity, action, service activities

It is normal for:

  • Three of the six subjects to be studied at higher level (each representing 240 teaching hours)
  • The remaining three subjects to be studied at standard level (each representing 150 teaching hours)

The 6 groups of subjects each of which one subject must be taken are:

Group 1 – Your first language (mother tongue) e.g. English if British, American, Australian, Canadian
Group 2 – A second language (from the range offered at the particular school)
Group 3 – Individuals and Society (subjects such as History, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, Theology, Philosophy, Economics, Business Studies etc)
Group 4 – Experimental Sciences (such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry or an Environmental subject)
Group 5 – Mathematics and computer science (in the case of Maths, this can be at three levels – higher, standard and studies)
Group 6 – The Arts (subjects such as Art, Drama / Theatre Studies, Music). Alternatively, if preferred, a student can take an extra language from group 2, another subject from individuals and society – group 3 or another science subject from group 4.

The 2 year IB Diploma programme is usually preceded in international schools by either International GCSEs (IGCSEs) or the Middle Years (MYP) programme of the International Baccalaureate.
