Applications calendar
Year One:
Year Two:
Year One
By now you should be:
- Checking subject choice against any career ideas. Maths and English language GCSEs A-C grades are required for many (but not all) careers and courses. Re-sit GCSEs if necessary.
- Arranging work experience. This enhances your university application and some courses require relevant work experience. Work shadowing and talking to a professional in the field is useful too.
Spring term
February
- Apply for any taster course eg medical courses, law courses, courses for women engineers.
- Plan ahead. If you need help talk to your teachers, tutors and Personal Adviser.
March/April
- Research higher education courses. Use reference books, prospectuses and the internet.
- Attend any local higher education events.
- If interested in employment start to research opportunities.

Summer term
May/June
- Continue to research courses and/or employers, gain relevant work experience, attend taster courses, higher education events and attend university open days.
July/August
- Start to put together your personal statement for section 10 of the UCAS application.
- Start to plan your gap year if you wish to defer entry to higher education.
- Look at sponsorship information. Contact companies as some may require you to apply to particular institutions.
- Attend university and/or department open days.
- Review your future plans in the light of exam results.

Year Two
Autumn term
September/October
- Finalise your higher education choices. UCAS electronic application may be available in school/college.
- UCAS applications usually start 1 st September (deadline is usually mid January). Check date with UCAS.
- Oxford and Cambridge applications deadline is usually mid October – check the exact dates with the institutions.
- Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science deadline is usually mid October (apply by mid October for deferred entry too). Check the dates with the institutions.
- Apply direct to courses that do not have a central application system, eg art foundation courses.
- For all courses apply as early as possible since popular courses can fill up quickly.
- The progress of all UCAS applications can be checked at any time using the password given to you.
November/December
- NMAS (Nursing and Midwifery Admissions Service for Diplomas) initial closing date is usually mid December. Applications received after this but before 30 th June will be considered if there are vacancies. Check dates with NMAS.
- Art UCAS applications apply through Route A (usually 1 st September – 15 th January) or route B (usually 1 st January – 24 th March). Refer to UCAS to check exact dates and application instructions to clarify route applicable to you.
- If you want to go into employment put together your CV.

Spring term
January/February
- UCAS closing date is usually mid January (check exact date with UCAS) except applications to Oxford and Cambridge , medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and art Route B courses.
- If applying for employment, look at job vacancies at your local Connexions Centre, in local and national newspapers, and on the internet. Some vacancies may be displayed in schools and colleges. Contact employers you are interested in by sending your CV and a covering letter.
March/April
- Art Route B UCAS applications deadline is usually mid March. Make sure you check the exact date with UCAS.

- Results are published and Clearing starts.
- Higher education vacancies published in national newspapers, on teletext and on the internet.
- Help with Clearing available at your school or college and from your careers adviser.
